Bill Tuttle
The Monster Maker

William J. Tuttle (1912-2007) was the head makeup artist at M.G.M. Studios for whom he worked on more than 300 films. In 1965, he received a special Oscar for his work on George Pal's Seven Faces of Dr. Lao, long before makeup became an official Oscar category. From 1968 until his retirement in 1981, he worked on more than 30 other films for other production companies. For The Time Machine, Bill Tuttle sculpted the Morlocks' faces, hands, and feet based on the sketches drawn by George Pal.

Few years before The Time Machine, Rod Taylor and Bill Tuttle met in M.G.M. Studios, likely in 1955 when filming The Catered Affair by Richard Brooks. This photo is presented courtesy of Don Coleman.

Scanned by Don Coleman from his copy of the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland issue #8 (September 1960), this photo could have been taken shortly after the movie opening or during the filming (therefore, it would be an off-camera still).
